Recap: Klaus Kruger, an old college friend of Matt’s, comes to visit. At the behest of Karen, Matt flies back to Lichtenbad with Klaus where he is to receive the eye surgery that Karen so desperately wants for Matt. Of course, Matt can sense that Klaus is lying and there is more than meets the eye here. In Lichtenbad, the residents are in fear of Klaus. He is not the benevolent ruler he claims to be. He lives in a castle surrounded by a moat, protected by robots and knights. The doctor who lives in the castle and is there to perform the surgery, is being held captive. Turns out that Klaus is collecting the best men at every profession to serve him in Lichtenbad. The doctor discovers that Matt is Daredevil but dies of radiation before he has a chance to tell anyone. Matt battles Klaus; eventually, Klaus falls off of his castle and dies. Matt does not have the surgery and is still blind.
Thoughts: Another fun issue. Matt really ups the trash talking game here. As Daredevil, he lets out that other side of him who can boast and wisecrack. The love triangle issues continue here. Foggy realizes that Karen is in love with Matt. He becomes super jealous and angry with Matt. Foggy openly mocks Matt to Karen and then instantly feels bad. Seems Matt is not the only one with Catholic guilt.
Wally Wood and Bobby Powell working together on the art is a thing of beauty. The art on this issue is as fresh as anything put out today. Simple panels with Matt, Foggy and Karen in the office have life. Nothing is wasted- conversation between the three, Matt and Karen removing their coats, Foggy in the foreground practicing his putts. There is a Norman Rockwell feel which is a definite slice of life. I wish Wood had worked on more Daredevil.
