The Matador
Recap: Daredevil encounters the Matador, who is attacking an armored truck. Matt is distracted by a worker who falls due to a cable snapping. Matador escapes. Matt agrees to take Karen to a costumed party until Foggy can get there. At the party, the Matador is in attendance in costume. Matt slips into Daredevil gear. He is beaten and embarrassed by the Matador. Shortly after, The Matador robs a burglar alarm company. The Matador becomes something of a legend. Matt does some research and discovers who the Matador truly is. He makes a bold, public statement that the Matador is actually Daredevil. This draws out the Matador. Daredevil plays possum to increase his arrogance. He then bests him in battle.
Thoughts: This is the first story with Wally Wood on art. For me, Wood is the absolute best. He created a lot of the visual language for Daredevil that is still used today. Wood is also famously known for creating a system of shots for dynamic panels.

This issue is a joy to read, and somehow, Wood and Lee made a corny character like the Matador a formidable opponent. The back and forth between the two shows the difference in cockiness between Daredevil and Matt. This issue also shows, again, his love for Foggy and their friendship. By the end, Matt comes to the realization that he may have to suffer losses so that Daredevil can win. He also decides that his lifestyle is not good for Karen. I’m not buying it, but he can convince himself all he wants:) Issue 5 also shows that Daredevil is a real hero; he gives up his battle with the Matador to save an innocent person. At his heart, Matt Murdock is a good man.
