Recap: In this issue, The Thing asks Nelson and Murdock in their capacity as lawyers to check out the lease at the Baxter Building. Foggy informs the Thing that leases are more up Matt’s alley. The Thing informs him that it will require him to visit the building. During this time, Daredevil is breaking up a criminal ring that so happens to be run by Electro. At the same time, Electro learns that the Fantastic Four will not be home, so he plans to break in and steal Reed’s inventions to sell to the highest buyer. The two run into each other and the fight ensues. Initially, Electro gets the jump on Daredevil incapacitating him. He sends Daredevil into space in a rocket designed by Reed Richards. Using his heightened senses, he manages to bring the rocket back to earth safely. He chases Electro to a theater where the two fight. Ultimately Electro is short circuited with water and arrested.
Thoughts: It’s interesting that Electro appears in only the second issue of Daredevil. He recently made his first appearance in the Amazing Spider-Man a few months earlier. I can’t help but imagine that it has something to do with trying to ride the Spidey train while establishing a new hero. Surely, a connection to Spider-Man couldn’t be a bad thing. Speaking of connections, the Fantastic Four also make an appearance here. They are Marvel’s first family. It is smart establishing that Matt is living and working in the same space as the beloved FF.
Karen continues to push Matt to get a surgery that can restore his eyesight. Matt refuses but makes up excuses to not give up the secrets of his powers. He knows if he regains his sight, he will likely lose all of his enhanced other senses. He uses being disappointed if it doesn’t work as his excuse. The romantic beginnings between Karen and Matt continue. Nothing has happened yet, but the seeds are definitely being planted. Karen is very much attracted to Matt.
This issue is true to the silver age of comics, where the zany works. In this issue, Daredevil is thrown into a rocket and shot into space. Without eyesight, and a great knowledge of how rockets work, he manages to bring it back to earth safely. It’s wacky, it’s goofy, and I’m here for it.
Next issue- The Owl!
